Waterproof, shock-proof, freezeproof design
As the flagship of the μTough Series, the μTough-8000 is as tough as they come. Waterproof to a depth of 10 metres*1 and resistant to temperatures as low as -10°C*4, it also boasts advanced dustproofing*2 technology to keep out sand and dirt, as well as shockproof construction capable of withstanding a fall up to 2 metres*3 or a load of up to 100 kgf*5

Every aspect of this camera's construction has been optimized to maximize its resistance to water pressure, enhancing the overall level of waterproof performance and allowing it to be safely used for underwater shooting without an underwater case. From diving and snorkelling to surfing and water-skiing, the μTough-8000's superior waterproof characteristics make it the ideal choice.
Shockproof at heights up to 2 metres*3
Thanks to the use of a foldable optical lens unit and floating electric circuit boards, the incorporation of shock-absorbing material inside the camera, and high-rigidity material in the outer finish and a shock-absorbing mechanism to protect the lens unit from impacts, the camera structure is strong enough to withstand the impact of dropping from a height of 2 metres.
Low temperature resistance to -10°C*4
Ordinary digital cameras are not usually guaranteed to function at temperatures below 0°C, but all internal electrical components of the μTough-8000 are guaranteed to operate at temperatures as low as -10°C*2. This assures reliable shooting performance in the winter or under cold conditions.
Dual Image Stabilization with CCD-shift image stabilization mechanism
CCD-shift image stabilization was previously thought to be incompatible with a shockproof camera, but Olympus was able to incorporate an effective image stabilization mechanism thanks to the development of an Olympus-original shock resistance mechanism that could be incorporated in the camera without increasing its size. Combining CCD-shift image stabilization with high-sensitivity shooting, Olympus's Dual Image Stabilization effectively prevents the image blur that can be caused by camera shake or subject movement, enabling worry-free shooting in extreme environments, whether on land or underwater.
New underwater detection sensor
In addition to the traditional altitude, atmospheric pressure and water depth display functions, this camera incorporates a new underwater sensor that lets the camera know when it is immersed underwater. LCD brightness is automatically optimized for underwater conditions and the display gives underwater scene modes (Underwater Snapshot, Underwater Wide 1, Underwater Wide 2 and Underwater Macro) priority over other scene modes so that the user can instantly select the mode according to the subject. Together with an alarm that alerts the user when immersion depth exceeds 7 metres, this new sensor makes underwater shooting easier and safer than ever.
